Murray fends off Cilic challenge

Tennis News: Andy Murray.

Andy Murray beat the rain and Marin Cilic to book his place in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for a fifth successive year.
The pair had been forced off yesterday with the fourth seed leading 7-5 3-1 and endured more disruption today before Murray clinched a 7-5 6-2 6-3 victory under leaden skies on Court One.
The Scot had looked nervy at the start yesterday but was much more fluent today and moved smoothly through to a last-eight meeting with Juan Martin del Potro or David Ferrer.
Murray's absence from Centre Court had caused some controversy yesterday but the 25-year-old did not feel he had been unfairly treated.
He said: "I don't care which court I play on. It makes no difference. Any player would rather play on Centre because it's got the roof so you'll get your match in.
"But I don't deserve to play every match on Centre, I just wish the weather was a bit better. I think I'll probably play on Centre."
The players returned to Court One as scheduled at midday but it began to spit with rain just as umpire Carlos Bernardes called time.
There was a brief delay before it was decided they could begin, and Murray needed only one point to move into a 4-1 lead.
Cilic then held serve before Bernardes decided the rain was too persistent and they went off court again after barely five minutes of play and only six points.
The rain did not last long but there were plenty of showers around and it was not until 1.05pm that the players returned to court.
It began to spit again as they warmed up but there were no further delays and Murray easily held his serve to love to move 5-2 in front.
The Scot looked confident and was hitting much more freely than yesterday, and a combination of backhand and forehand winners took him to set point on the Cilic serve.
With the rain falling again he took it with another backhand return right at the feet of Cilic that the Croatian could only paddle into the net.
The world number four lost his concentration a touch at the start of the third set and four times found himself break point down, but each time a big serve got him out of trouble and he held on.
It was raining increasingly heavily and the players had an extended sit in their chairs at the change of ends, but they did not leave the court and were soon under way again.
Murray was so confident he finished the third game with a second serve ace and then promptly broke again, a running forehand pass banging another nail in Cilic's coffin.
Cilic, the 16th seed, had gone into the clash on an eight-match winning streak on grass after lifting the AEGON Championships trophy at Queen's Club but he looked to have little appetite for a fightback.
He did save four break points in the sixth game to deny Murray a 5-1 lead, but it was only a temporary reprieve and the Scot clinched an impressive victory after two hours and 10 minutes when Cilic netted a backhand.

Hamilton to carry Olympic torch

Formula 1 News: Lewis Hamilton, McLaren

Lewis Hamilton will carry the Olympic Torch the day after the British Grand Prix.
Hamilton is hoping for a double celebration in a week's time.
The day after the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday when Hamilton will be aiming for his second victory at the Northamptonshire circuit, he will carry the Olympic torch.
Hamilton was initially asked to do so through his old hometown of Stevenage where he was born and raised.
However, those plans had to be shelved when it was realised the day the torch visits the Hertfordshire town on July 8 he will be otherwise engaged competing in the race.
Organisers and Hamilton have agreed he will run on Monday when the torch makes its way from Luton to Oxford, via Milton Keynes and Buckingham, close to Silverstone.
About being one of the 8,000 torchbearers, Hamilton said: "It will be an incredibly proud moment.
"I'm so honoured to have been asked to do it. Never in a million years did I think I'd get to do something so cool.''
Hamilton, who currently resides in Monaco, added: "I've no idea at this stage where I'll be running, but to be selected to do my bit is a real privilege."

Rain plays spoilsport in Colombo

AFP
Cricket News: Colombo

Pakistan's hopes of levelling the Test series against Sri Lanka suffered a massive blow as no play was possible after lunch on day three due to persistent rain in Colombo.
SCORECARD
The tourists, who lost the opening Test in Galle by 209 runs, finally declared their mammoth innings on 551 for six and Junaid Khan got them off to a fantastic start in the field by dismissing Tharanga Paranavitana for a duck.
Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara steadied the ship by putting on an unbroken 59 in 11 overs to take Sri Lanka to 70 for one at lunch before the heavens opened during the interval and the day's play was finally called off at 3.35pm local time.
Mohammad Hafeez's 196 and Azhar Ali's 157 had already put Pakistan in a commanding position and they continued to steadily accumulate this morning.
They did not start well, however, as Asad Shafiq was run out in the second over of the day following Dilshan's direct hit from square-leg.
Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq struck two fours off Nuwan Pradeep and moved to his half-century soon after before Adnan Akmal departed when he tamely struck Rangana Herath to Dilshan at cover.
Abdur Rehman hammered two sixes down the ground off Herath and Suraj Randiv respectively, with Misbah, on 66 not out, finally declaring shortly afterwards.
Sri Lanka got off to a dismal start in reply when Paranavitana inside edged Junaid on to his pads to Azhar at short-leg in the fourth over.
But Dilshan did not want to be shackled and crunched successive fours off Junaid before repeating the trick in the next over, with Aizaz Cheema the unlucky bowler.
Dilshan struck nine fours in his unbeaten 46 off 54 balls and was ably supported by Sangakkara, who will resume on 22 not out on Tuesday.

Torres bags Golden Boot with big finale

Football News: Fernando Torres.

Fernando Torres has been confirmed by UEFA as the winner of its prestigious Golden Boot award for Euro 2012.
By ESPNSTAR.com staff
Torres's goal and assist in the closing six minutes of Spain's 4-0 triumph over Italy in the final took him to three goals and one assist for the tournament - level with Germany's Mario Gomez who also has three goals and an assist.
However, Torres took home the Golden Boot prize by virtue of having played fewer minutes (189) at the tournament than Gomez (282).
Netherlands striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar finished Euro 2012 as the overall top scorer despite not scoring in the finals because of his 12 goals in the qualifying campaign.
Michel Platini's nine goals at the 1984 UEFA European Championship finals for France still remains the top scorer record for a single tournament.

Extraordinary Spain played own game

UEFA via Getty Images / Getty Images Europe
Football News: Spain celebrate.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque labelled his side's record-breaking performance in Kiev as "extraordinary".
La Roja became the first international side to win three successive major tournaments thanks to their 4-0 win over Italy, the biggest final win in European Championship history.
First-half goals from David Silva and Jordi Alba put Spain in control.
And once Thiago Motta had gone off with a hamstring injury just four minutes after his introduction, Italy were forced to play the final half hour with 10 men.
That allowed Spain to really rub it in as Fernando Torres added a third before setting up Chelsea team-mate Juan Mata to wrap up an incredible win.
"It's true we were lucky enough to play a great match," said Del Bosque.
"Everything worked for us.
"It was an extraordinary performance against a difficult opponent."
The manner of the triumph was the perfect answer to a growing number of critics, who have labelled Spain boring.
Arsene Wenger joined that band with some particularly pointed comments earlier on Sunday.
Wenger was present in Kiev in his role as a pundit for French TV and could not fail to be impressed.
Del Bosque insisted there was no outside influence involved in Spain's success.
"We played our own game," he said.
"There were no real external influences: we were faithful to what we've done in recent years."
Del Bosque expressed some sympathy for Italy, who had less preparation time after Thursday's semi-final win over Germany.
"The Italians have played a great tournament," said Del Bosque.
"They had the bad luck of the injury to Thiago Motta and that's where it all ended for them, unfortunately."
Andres Iniesta claimed the man-of-the-match award after another exceptional performance.
He is one of four players - Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Xavi are the others - to have started all three final triumphs.
"It's very nice to have this man-of-the-match trophy but it's especially great to be champions again," he said.
"The team played a great match and all the players were at their top level.
"We are very happy."
Iniesta backed up Del Bosque's sentiments about criticism having no effect.
The Barcelona man insisted Spain stayed true to their beliefs.
"Everybody has their opinion," he said.
"We are not here to say that our game is the most beautiful of them all.
"Everyone has a different view.
"Today [Sunday], we had a great level of play and were faithful to our style.
"That they only had 10 players made things easier for us.
"This victory is unique and magical.
"It is something that cannot be repeated.
"We haven't ignored how great it is."

Woods eases ahead in Maryland

Getty Images / Getty Images North America
Golf News: Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods eased into contention on day three of the AT&T National at Congressional - but there was nobody there to see it.
The storms that have battered the mid-Atlantic left the Maryland course unsafe for spectators, so Woods was not accompanied by his usual whoops and cheers as he carded a four-under 67 to sit six under overall, one behind leader Brendon de Jonge.
Woods' round was matched by playing partner Bo Van Pelt who also finished on six under for a share of second, as did South Korea's Noh Seung-yul after a two-under 69.
Overnight leader Hunter Mahan could only manage a two-over 73 to finish the day five under in joint fifth, alongside Billy Hurley III who carded a best-of-the-day 66.
Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela was on his own on four under.
Woods was bogey-free for his round, which included birdies at the first, third, sixth and 10th, and he used only five putts over the first six holes.
The unusual conditions did not seem to adversely affect Woods, but Van Pelt joked: "I told Tiger that was a Bo Van Pelt crowd, so I was used to that. I was very comfortable with 10 or 15 people watching me play golf."
Van Pelt also did not drop a shot, carding four birdies all on the front nine.
"It was nice to just get it in," Van Pelt said on www.pgatour.com. "I think we're all fortunate that nobody got hurt out here last night [Friday].
"It's a credit to the ground staff that they got this golf course ready. I'm sure if you saw pictures of what it looked like at midnight the fact that we played golf today [Saturday] is a minor miracle."
Zimbabwean De Jonge, who birdied the second, sixth and 12th, could have had a two-stroke lead but for a bogey on 14.
Defending champion Nick Watney was two under to sit five off the pace, one ahead of England's Greg Owen who went round in 67 today [Saturday].
Scotland's Martin Laird finished the day one over, one stroke ahead of Englishman Brian Davis.

Superb Stoner wins Dutch GP

Motorsport News: Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda

Casey Stoner drew level with Jorge Lorenzo in the MotoGP title race after winning the Dutch Grand Prix in Assen.
Lorenzo saw his 25-point championship lead wiped out by Stoner after he was taken out by Alvaro Bautista on the first corner of the race.
Stoner started from pole position and held off his Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa to win, with Andrea Dovizioso claiming third place after overtaking Ben Spies on the final lap.
The Australian drew level with Lorenzo on 140 points in the MotoGP title standings with Pedrosa third on 121 and Britain's Cal Crutchlow fourth with 77.
Crutchlow, racing two weeks after breaking his ankle, was hampered by the early crash and dropped back to 15th place but he recovered well to finish fifth.
Stoner told BBC Sport after his third win of the season: "I didn't see that Lorenzo had crashed as I was focused on the fight at the front but what a difference a day makes.
"I had a big crash in practice on Friday but we managed to pull through for the race. Today has worked out perfectly for me."
Lorenzo was left furious with Bautista for the collision, an incident which has been placed under investigation by race officials
Stoner later Tweeted: "I feel sorry for @lorenzo99 he doesn't deserve that to happen and I don't want points that way. Thanks for everyone's support today!!"
The two Honda riders dominated the race and Stoner took the lead from Pedrosa with 10 laps remaining.
Some of the most exciting action came from watching Crutchlow pick his way through the field and then battle past Hector Barbera, Valentino Rossi and then Nicky Hayden to finish a creditable fifth.
Dovizioso caught up with Spies with three laps remaining and the pair were involved a thrilling tussle for the final podium position.
Dovizioso made his move heading into turn one of the final lap and then held his advantage to claim third place.
Race officials later demoted Bautista to the back of the grid for the next race at the Sachsenring in Germany on July 8 as punishment for causing the crash.
An appeal by Bautista's team, San Carlo Gresini Honda, against the punishment was dismissed.
