Red Devils driven by a single purpose

Manchester United will be eager for the start of the new season, as they look to re-establish themselves as England’s leading club side.

The rollercoaster ride that was the previous campaign will be fresh in the minds of Red Devils fans, especially the manner in which the team imploded inches from the finishing line and handed the title to Manchester City. Although United stalwarts Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes conceded that Roberto Mancini's squad deserved to nick the championship, they are motivated by the last-gasp loss to wrest the title back.
Sir Alex Ferguson's team might not be licking their wounds in public, but they will be determined to prevent a repeat of what happened last term.  Nonetheless, the upcoming season is likely to be one emphasized on rebuilding and transition.

The old guard - an asset and a liability
A quick glance through the United team sheet will reveal several players on the wrong side of 30.  The likes of Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs no longer possess the speed or stamina they used to, but are still considered important fixtures of the first team.
One cannot blame Ferguson for his continued faith in these experienced heads, as young guns like Phil Jones and Tom Cleverley still need time to prove themselves consistent and dependable players. As United new boy Shinji Kagawa will require a bedding-in period, one can expect Scholes and Giggs to still feature in the first half of the season. However, Ferguson will keep a close watch on the physical condition of the old guard, so as to ensure they remain options in case of a recurrence of last season's injury crisis.
With this campaign being Scholes' swansong, the aging playmaker will be phased out as the season progresses, for the Red Devils manager to ascertain the readiness of the next generation of midfield generals. Antonio Valencia will be expected to pick up where he left off in the last campaign, while Ashley Young must put a torrid Euro 2012 campaign behind him. Playing time will also be a precious commodity for Anderson and Nani, both of whom must make the most of their opportunities after an extended stay on the treatment table.
The rotation of midfielders looks secure, but the United manager will be wary of doing so in defence. Jonny Evans deputized well in captain Nemanja Vidic's absence, and he may well be Ferguson's saving grace, affording the Scot the option of rotating between Ferdinand, Vidic and Evans in central defence. Had Evans failed in his task to replace Vidic, the Red Devils boss would be left with the inexperience of Jones and Chris Smalling, both of whom lack the proficiency required to step into Vidic or Ferdinand's shoes.
After being spurned by England manager Roy Hodgson for Euro 2012, 33-year old Ferdinand will be eager to prove he still has what it takes to play at the highest level, while Ferguson will be hoping the long injury lay-off has not dulled Vidic's no-nonsense style. There is also distinct lack of cover for Evra, after Ferguson sent Fabio out on-loan. The experienced Frenchman was a shadow of his former self last season, and was criticised by United supporters for his lacklustre performances.
Although the Red Devils were heavily linked with Everton's Leighton Baines earlier in the summer, speculation has since cooled. Ferguson appears to have placed much of his efforts pursuing Lucas Moura and Robin van Persie, overlooking the left side of defence. Unless the Scot has an ace up his sleeve or Evra returns to form, rival clubs will surely take advantage of this chink in the armour.
Versatility in midfield
The centre of the park is an area where the Scot has a bevy of options, with an ideal mix of youth and experience.
Ferguson will look to shift some playmaking responsibilities from Scholes to Kagawa by slotting in the former Borussia Dortmund man in the hole, a position Kagawa favours. Playing in the increasingly popular 4-2-3-1 formation could see the Japanese support Rooney, while flanked by Young and Valencia, allowing Scholes to take on a deep-lying playmaker role alongside Carrick.
The Old Trafford faithful will be eager to see what Kagawa has under the bonnet. To his credit, the Japanese appears comfortable with early expectations. Despite critics questioning his ability to adapt to the physical nature of the Premier League, Kagawa's industrious nature and intelligence should see him do well in his debut season.
As Ferguson's unsung hero of the previous campaign, Carrick has proven his versatility by playing at centre-back for a few of the team's pre-season fixtures. His absence in midfield was easily countered by Ferguson reverting to a traditional 4-4-2, with Kagawa, Cleverley, and Scholes available to fill the two central midfield spots. The surprise return of Darren Fletcher will also be an added boost to the Red Devils' ranks, with his versatility and unquestionable commitment to the team's cause.
With Young, Kagawa, Cleverley and Scholes providing the creativity, Valencia supplying the runs and penetration down the flanks, Nani's skills on the ball and the untapped potential of new signing Nick Powell, the Red Devils midfield might just be what powers the team to success.
Overreliance on Rooney must end
As United's main man upfront, Rooney blasted himself to fourth place on the club's all-time scorers list last season. Despite the accolade, the Englishman will not soon forget the mid-campaign slump he experienced.
Rooney's barren run started in the middle of September and lasted till early December. The Red Devils were leading the league table then, but relinquished top spot to City when their principle striker struggled to make chances count. Although Rooney's form returned and his goals pushed United back into the lead at the tail end of the campaign, strikes from an additional source could have eased the pressure on his shoulders.
An extended run as Rooney's partner earned Welbeck a place on the PFA Young Player of the Year shortlist, and the striker bolstered his reputation by scoring at Euro 2012. Welbeck is recognized as a player that has been steadily improving, but for all his intelligence on the ball and movement off it, he has yet to prove a consistent scorer.
Hitting the back of the net posed little difficulty for Hernandez in his debut season, but the Mexican's form has suffered after being plagued by injuries in the last campaign. Chicharito is still favoured by Ferguson, but the former Guadalaraja striker has not looked particularly impressive in pre-season performances so far.
It is for these reasons, that Robin van Persie enters stage left. Last season's Golden Boot winner chose the Red Devils over City and you can bet the United manager intends to make full use of his instinct upfront.
There can be little doubt that van Persie's move will shove Welbeck and Hernandez lower in the pecking order, as the combination of playing Rooney and van Persie places big fat ticks in the finishing, pace and trickery boxes. Since both are equally comfortable playing as a lone man upfront, they could take turns playing off one another and dropping deep to create opportunities for the other to finish.
If Ferguson chooses to go all pace and agility upfront, who is to say that he will not pair van Persie and Welbeck, with Rooney playing in an advanced midfield role just behind them? The English duo would continue their supporting legwork, while van Persie's composure in front of goal should see the score-line pile up in United's favour.
The four Red Devils hitmen could form a fearsome attacking quartet upfront if the manager needs the team to go for broke. By lining up Hernandez with Rooney, opposition central defences would have their hands full dealing with the duo's agility and strength, while their full-backs would have a torrid time with van Persie cutting in from the right to take shots on his preferred left foot and Welbeck terrorizing the left flank.
A determined and driven squad
On a whole, the Red Devils will fancy their chances to regain the Premier League trophy. Unsurprisingly, defending champions City will be their biggest rivals, but United will also be feeling the heat from Arsenal and Chelsea, two teams who have strengthened their ranks considerably this summer.
While City may have enviable squad depth and talent on paper, Ferguson's men have always stayed in contention regardless of the circumstances. This season should prove no different, as the Red Devils, a squad United by desire and determination, pursue not only their 20th championship, but the start of their next period of supremacy.

Manchester United complete RVP deal

Football News: Robin van Persie.

Robin van Persie has completed his move to Manchester United.
RVP to make United bow against Everton
United confirmed they had agreed a fee with Arsenal on Wednesday evening, and after a medical on Thursday the final elements of the transfer have been wrapped up.
The deal has been done in time for Van Persie to go straight into Sir Alex Ferguson's squad for Monday's trip to Everton.
United announced in a statement: "Robin van Persie has completed his medical, agreed personal terms and signed for Manchester United on a four-year contract until June 2016."
Manager Ferguson said: "Robin is a world-class striker with a proven record in England and in European football.
"His talents need no introduction to our fans - he has scored a number of goals against us in some classic battles with his former club.
"His movement, finishing and all-round ability are outstanding."
Van Persie said it was an "honour" to sign for United.
He said: "I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers, bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for the biggest trophies in the game. I can't wait to get started."
Van Persie has signed a four-year contract with United, bringing to an end one of the longest-running transfer sagas of the summer.
Ferguson has fought off competition from Manchester City and Juventus to land Van Persie.
However, he also needed to break an impasse with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who did not want to sell last season's Golden Boot winner to a rival club.
Even a week ago, Wenger had not given up hope of persuading the 29-year-old to stay.
However, when Van Persie was booed by Arsenal fans at a pre-season game in Germany on Sunday, it signalled the end of his Gunners career.

Murray crashes out in Cincinnati

Tennis News: Andy Murray Great Britain

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic won through to the quarter-finals of the Western & Southern Open - but Andy Murray slipped up in Cincinnati.
Federer beat Bernard Tomic 6-2 6-4 to set up a clash against Mardy Fish and was pleased with how things went, with the US Open now very much in the minds of players.
The Swiss told www.atptour.com: "I was able to mix it up well and not have too many hiccups on my own serve.
"Then I was able to create some opportunities and take advantage of that and get the win."
Djokovic was on the court for only 30 minutes, winning the first set of his match against Nikolay Davydenko 6-0 before the Russian withdrew because of a shoulder injury.
However, Olympic gold medalist Murray was brought back down to earth with a bump, suffering a shock defeat at the hands of unseeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy .
Murray had beaten the world number 38 in all of their four previous encounters but looked out of sorts on his own serve and was subsequently punished in a 6-4 6-4 loss.
Fish set up his clash with Federer with an overdue 6-3 6-3 win against Radek Stepanek, while Juan Martin del Potro beat Viktor Troicki 7-6 (7/2) 2-6 6-1.
Marin Cilic reached the last eight with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 defeat of Pablo Andujar and Stanislas Wawrinka joined him after knocking out Kei Nishikori 6-3 6-3.
In the women's event, the Williams sisters progressed with straight sets wins.
Serena won her 19th successive match by beating Urszula Radwanska 6-4 6-3, while Venus had few problems seeing off Sara Errani 6-3 6-0.
Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska did not have things all her own way before seeing off Sloane Stephens 6-1 4-6 6-4 - but Sam Stosur's 6-1 6-3 win over Ekaterina Makarova was more convincing.
Elsewhere. Angelique Kerber defeated Andrea Hlavackova 6-4 7-6 (7/5) and Petra Kvitova knocked out Peng Shuai 6-2 6-2.

Wenger reticent on possible Song exit

Football News: Alex Song Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated that no decision has been made regarding a possible move to Barcelona for Alex Song.
Cameroon midfielder Song has been linked with a £15million move to Barcelona.
When asked if the 24-year-old could leave and others come in, Wenger said: "Both can happen.
"This decision (on Song) is not made. No (bid has been made). I cannot tell you more."
The Arsenal manager added: "Midfield is a different area because we have nine or 10 midfielders of top-class quality.
"Just today we have six or seven midfielders available, plus (Jack) Wilshere and (Emmanuel) Frimpong who are coming back. (Abou) Diaby is available again, (Mikel) Arteta, (Santi) Cazorla, (Aaron) Ramsey, (Alex) Oxlade-Chamberlain now plays central midfield - this is an area we have much more freedom to make decisions."
Wenger confirmed central defender Thomas Vermaelen would be the club's new captain following Van Persie's departure. The Holland international is in the process of finalising the formalities of a £24million switch to Manchester United, having earlier in the summer announced he would not be signing a new deal with the Gunners.
Van Persie is the latest of Wenger's key men to move on, following last summer's departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.
However, the Arsenal manager is confident Belgian centre-back Vermaelen can lead the club forwards.
Speaking at this morning's press conference ahead of the Barclays Premier League opener against Sunderland, Wenger said: "Vermaelen was vice captain, so it is a quick decision.
"I think we have many potential captains, and Mikel Arteta will be the vice captain."
Wenger believes the summer additions of Olivier Giroud, Lukas Podolski and Spain midfielder Cazorla will go someway to offset Van Persie's departure.
"We regret that we have lost a great player and for one simple reason - he only had one year left on his contract. He wanted to go," Wenger said.
"We anticipated this situation might happen, therefore we bought Podolski and Giroud.
"I think we were prepared to keep him of course, but as well the worse (case scenario) was to sell him.
"Selling to a rival was not what we wanted, but there was not much choice.
"We had only one club really interested at the level we thought would be acceptable and that was Manchester United.
"At the end of the day, that was the only decision we could make."

LIVE: ENG vs SA: 3rd Test, Day 2

Cricket News: Vernon Phillander

England would look to quickly wrap up the South African innings while the visitors would hope for their tail-enders to press on and post a decent total.
Recap of Day 1
England cast aside the controversy surrounding Kevin Pietersen to make an outstanding start to the must-win third Test against South Africa at Lord's.

Steven Finn was to the fore, on his home ground, with three wickets in seven balls - and afterwards insisted the shenanigans surrounding Pietersen over the past week simply did not cross England's minds when the time came to play cricket again.

So it seemed as Finn helped to reduce South Africa to 54 for four at one stage - and even after JP Duminy (61) had underpinned a fightback to 262 for seven, England's 6ft 8in seamer was content with his and his team-mates' work.

Careful, it seemed, to avoid using the name of England's absent superstar, he said afterwards: "Whenever we go and bowl, regardless of what's happening elsewhere, we always want to do what we do well

Hamilton happy for stable season

European Grand Prix Race Day: Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton believes a happier personal life and the strengthening of relationships with those around him have paid dividends out on track this season.
Last year Hamilton was embroiled in several controversies, visiting the stewards offices more frequently than he did the podium while away from the track his personal life was also dealt several blows.
This year, though, there is a much happier Hamilton walking around the paddock as he is back with his girlfriend, often has his father by his side and seems more content with life.
And that has translated into his on-track results resulting in Hamilton having a shot at winning this year's World title.
"Every year you finish the season and you try to analyse what you've been through and what you've done, and try to take away the positives from what you've done," the 27-year-old told Autosport.
"Then you try to channel those and then improve on the things that you didn't do so well.
"I've always said it's a combination not just of things you do at the track, but it's your personal life out there, time at home, time with friends, those sort of things.
"I've strengthened bridges and relationships with people, not only in my personal life but also in my team. I've been working with the engineers better this year and all of that stuff has just helped.
"I don't have any particular problems going on in my life, or any baggage - and last year I had a big, big sack. Fortunately I've dumped that in the dumpster and it's all good now."
Hamilton is fourth in the drivers' championship with two victories and 117 points, 47 behind championship leader Fernando Alonso.

Rodgers backing Downing to improve

Getty Images / Getty Images Europe
Football News: Stewart Downing Kyle Naughton Norwich vs Liverpool
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hopes winger Stewart Downing can put his disappointing maiden season at Anfield behind him and start afresh at West Brom.
The England international, like a number of former boss Kenny Dalglish's signings, began the previous campaign promisingly but tailed off and he finished without a goal to his name.
Downing has already rectified that glaring statistic with the first goal of Rodgers' reign, hitting the winner in the Europa League qualifier against Gomel in Belarus just over a fortnight ago.
The Reds boss, who replaced Dalglish in June, has been impressed by the 28-year-old so far and hopes his make his early good form something more substantive.
"He has been excellent," said the 39-year-old ahead of his Barclays Premier League debut as Liverpool manager on Saturday.
"I have seen him since he was a young player at Middlesbrough and he had periods at Villa where he was excellent.
"Obviously coming to a club like this the first season is always going to be difficult but he is a player who has a lot of talent and he wants to work hard.
"He is technically strong and physically quick and that aggressive part of his game is coming back, which is important.
"Players will be successful if they are confident and I have seen him play confidently in pre-season so long may that continue."
The return of midfielder Lucas Leiva is likely to be as, if not more, significant.
Having ruptured cruciate knee ligaments in November the Brazil international - who was enjoying his best form before injury struck - is back playing ahead of schedule and Rodgers is delighted.
"I've been very impressed. I like his mentality," he added.
"He is here to succeed, he is very much driven and he has an inherent belief in how we want to play.
"He has come back quicker than I thought he would. It is great testament to how hard he has worked."
Lucas could be lining up alongside new signing Joe Allen after the midfielder followed Rodgers to Anfield from Swansea.
The 22-year-old only completed his move last Friday but Rodgers rates the Wales international highly.
"I am sure he is very ready," said the Reds boss when asked whether Allen would feature at the Hawthorns.
"He had a good pre-season with Team GB at the Olympics and played 90 minutes for Wales so we'll see how he is.
"In all fairness he has only had a couple of days here. He was not able to play in the friendly (against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday) and then he went away with the international team.
"But I know how Joe works and he knows how I work. He is a good guy, a very humble guy, and I am sure he will settle in fairly quickly."
Rodgers has now moved to strengthen his squad again, last night agreeing a deal with Heerenveen to sign winger Oussama Assaidi.
The 24-year-old, who must still pass a medical, scored 20 goals in 68 appearances for the Dutch club and has 22 caps for Morocco since making his international debut in February 2011.
