Button seeks major improvements
Jenson Button has called on McLaren to take risks and deliver a car to challenge Red Bull at the British Grand Prix.
After the euphoria of his stunning triumph in Canada a fortnight ago, reality bit hard for Button in Sunday's European Grand Prix as Sebastian Vettel strolled to victory.
Button, whose power-boost KERS system failed midway through the race, finished a minute behind Vettel in sixth place, with team-mate Lewis Hamilton 46 seconds down in fourth.
The duo are 77 and 89 points adrift respectively of Vettel, and the fear now is of another hammering at Silverstone where Red Bull have won the last two races.
"We've got a bit of work to do," Button said. "We've got to hope for some good upgrades because here we fell behind compared to Red Bull, and also Ferrari.
"There is a big gap behind us, but this isn't the place we want to be. We want to be challenging those two teams, but at the moment it is a bit difficult.
"We expected to be stronger against Ferrari, and not be far off the Red Bull, but the reality was very different.
"So we need the upgrades for Silverstone otherwise we're not going to be fighting Ferrari and Red Bull, which will be a shame at my home grand prix.
"At the moment Silverstone is not going to be a better circuit for us, so we need the upgrades to really challenge the cars in front.
"We can take some risks with some new parts and hopefully we'll have that when we get there, so we need to get our heads down and improve the car, the package.
"Aerodynamically we are not moving forward, and that's what we need to be concentrating on."
Hamilton was even more downbeat, not only fearing the worst for the British Grand Prix, but also the title race.
"It's finished really. In the sense of the championship it's almost over already," was Hamilton's brutal assessment, even though there are 275 points still to play for.
The defeatist attitude then spilled over when it came to looking ahead to a race he won in 2008 and was runner-up in last year.
"I'm not looking forward to it, I'm really not looking forward to it," Hamilton added.
"Of course, I'm really looking forward to seeing the fans because they always put a spark in the weekend and make it that much brighter.
"And I'll be going there as prepared as I can, racing as fast as I can, but we really might struggle.
"When you go to Silverstone the desire to win is even greater because it is your home race and the fans are spectacular.
"But we're not fast enough and with the regulations changing I personally think we're going to make another step backwards.
"I'm a little bit nervous about it. I think we might be affected more than the two teams ahead of us (Red Bull and Ferrari). It will be even worse for us."
