Hamburg confirm interest in Shaqiri
German Bundesliga outfit Hamburg have confirmed they have made contact with Basel to enquire on the availability of wonderkid Xherdan Shaqiri.
Shaqiri is enjoying a growing reputation in world football, which has only been enhanced by his recent performances at the European U-21 Championship in Denmark. The 19-year-old has been a star for the Swiss youngsters as they marched all the way to the final of the youth showpiece event, where they face heavy favourites Spain on Saturday.
Shaqiri has already been capped several times by the Switzerland senior side, and announced his arrival on the international seen last year with a stunning volley against England.
Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Roma just a trio of clubs that have been linked with the prodigiously-talented playmaker in recent time, but it now seems as though Hamburg have stolen the march on their more-illustrious counterparts by initiating contact with Basel, according to coach Michael Oenning.
"It is correct we have shown our interest to Basel," Oenning said according to Blick.
"Director of sport Frank Arnesen has contacted the club."
If Arnesen gets the freedom to exert his influence on the club, Hamburg could just be shaping to be a resurgent force in German football, especially with the track record he has.
In Arnesen's ten years as director of football with PSV Eindhoven, he was responsible for unearthing players who went on to become household names like Ronaldo, Jaap Stam, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Arjen Robben.
He was also responsible for luring Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda and John Obi Mikel to Chelsea during his time at Stamford Bridge, although the trio have enjoyed mixed fortunes in London.
Arnesen only recently started his stint with Hamburg but has already wasted no time in bringing in new talent, and has pulled something of a coup by landing three of Chelsea's more-talented youngsters in Michael Mancienne, Jacopo Sala and Gokhan Tore.
