ICC confirms mix-up in Dhoni dismissal
The ICC have confirmed India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was incorrectly given out during the second Test against West Indies.
Dhoni was caught by Shivnarine Chanderpaul off the bowling of Fidel Edwards on the opening day of the current match in Barbados, but on-field umpire Ian Gould suspected the delivery may have been a no-ball and sought confirmation from the third umpire Gregory Brathwaite. In the review that Brathwaite was shown by host broadcaster IMG Media, Edwards` delivery was legitimate and Dhoni was subsequently given out.
However, it was later established that Brathwaite had been shown the wrong replay and that the delivery that led to Dhoni's dismissal should have been called a no-ball, the ICC confirmed in a statement.
"The host broadcaster for this series, IMG Media, acknowledged the mistake and has apologised," said Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees.
"Having looked into the situation, I am satisfied it was an unfortunate but honest mistake in what is a tense and live environment. It is worth pointing out that the umpires followed the correct procedures and are without blame in this matter.
"Seeing as the game has continued, clearly there is no opportunity to reverse the decision. We are forced now to put it behind us and move on with the remainder of the match."
A spokesman for IMG said: "IMG Media takes its responsibilities on this matter very seriously. This was a case of human error, compounded by a senior replay operative having to return home at very short notice."
The ICC also noted that because this series does not have the Decision Review System (DRS), the enhanced standards, including the presence of an ICC technical official, are not in place as would be the case when DRS is used.
India, who lead the three-match series 1-0, were bowled out for 201 having been put into bat at Kensington Oval before West Indies reached 98 for five at the close of day two in a contest that has been rain-affected.
