Sharapova downs brave Robson

Former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova hailed Laura Robson's "great potential" after the British teenager gave her a major scare in the second round.
Sharapova, the fifth seed and title favourite, had to come from 4-1 down in the first set to beat Robson 7-6 (7/3) 6-3 and book a clash with Klara Zakopalova.Robson, the world number 254, will now return to the Challenger circuit.
Sharapova was just 17 - the same age Robson is now - when she won the Wimbledon title in 2004, but she urged the Brit to remain patient.
"She has great potential," said Sharapova.
"She's got to keep learning and keep playing and keep working hard. I think for everyone it's a really long road.
"It's great and it's important to play in front of thousands of people with the support of the British crowd.
"I also feel as you develop your game it's just as important to play the lower tournaments, when you are in the middle of nowhere and there's a small number of people watching.
"You're in the third set and you have to win those matches. That ultimately leads to experience.
"You learn a lot from those matches. She'll get that experience behind her back and she'll be a better player."
After two previous wild-card appearances at Wimbledon, Robson secured her first grand slam victory in the first round with a three-set win against Angelique Kerber.
"I expected her to come out and play really well," added Sharapova.
"I don't think she had anything to lose in this match. That brings out the best in someone when they go out and they play free and they just go for the lines."
Robson made a dream start. She fended off five break points to hold serve in the opening game and then moved a break up after consecutive double faults from Sharapova.
Robson's forehand was proving to be a real weapon - she hit six winners with it in the first two games - and she then consolidated the break before opening a 4-1 lead.
But Sharapova broke and levelled at 4-4 before taking the set into a tie-break, when again Robson held an advantage with a mini-break at 4-2.
Yet Sharapova once again proved too strong and she wrapped up the first set before asserting her authority at the start of the second set, breaking Robson to move 2-0 up.
Robson refused to go down without a fight and she broke straight back, clinching the game with a delicate sliced back-hand drop shot.
But that only prompted Sharapova to step up another gear and she secured two more breaks to open a 5-1 lead.
Robson battled all the way and broke back as Sharapova served for the match, and then worked another break point at 5-3 to excite the Court One crowd.
But hopes of a dramatic comeback from Robson were snuffed out as Sharapova, the three-time grand slam event winner, wrapped up the straight-sets victory which was anything but straightforward.
