Stoner dominates at Silverstone
Casey Stoner dominated practice for the AirAsia British MotoGP as the Australian set the fastest times during the practice sessions.
The Repsol Honda rider, who trails the factory Yamaha of defending champion Jorge Lorenzo by seven points in the championship standings ahead of Sunday's sixth round of the series, was quickest in the final practice session with a time of two minutes 15.666 seconds at the Northamptonshire circuit.Stoner swapped top place on the timesheets several times with the San Carlo Gresini Honda of Marco Simoncelli before finally exerting his authority towards the end of the session.
Second fastest time was still a good result for Simoncelli who has courted controversy this season as his aggressive riding style has led to fall-outs with other riders and sanctions from race officials, as well as an on-track clash at the French Grand Prix which left Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa with a broken collarbone which has ruled him out of Sunday's race.
Nicky Hayden was a surprise third quickest on the factory Ducati ahead of Britain's Cal Crutchlow on the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha.
Lorenzo was a disappointing fifth, with Repsol Honda's Andrea Dovizioso in sixth, Ben Spies (Yamaha) seventh and Cardion Ducati's Karel Abraham in eighth.
Multiple world champion Valentino Rossi (Ducati) was down in ninth and LCR Honda's Toni Elias rounded out the top 10.
Crutchlow's team-mate Colin Edwards was 16th and slowest as he returned to the track a week after breaking his collarbone.
Edwards suffered the injury during practice for the Catalunya Grand Prix near Barcelona a week ago, but after undergoing surgery the following day to have the bone repaired with a metal plate and 13 screws he had hoped to race last Sunday, just two days after suffering the injury.
Edwards was prevented from racing by doctors but was cleared this week to make his comeback.
