'We Have The Right 12'
Newly-appointed head coach of Jamaica's Sunshine Girls, Oberon Pitterson, said despite the absence of a number senior players from the squad for this year's World Netball Championships (WNC), she is very confident that the team can represent the country well.
Former captain and goal attack, Simone Forbes, and defender Kasey Evering - two of Jamaica's most outstanding senior players - will not be making the trip to Singapore for the Championships, which will be held from July 3-10.
Forbes is currently serving a three-month ban for an anti-doping drug violation, while Evering is injured.
Very ready
"We have the right 12 that will represent Jamaica and I think they will do very well," said Pitterson, who will have Annette Daley as her assistant.
"We certainly have a lot of depth in this team because as you can see from the last couple of Test series', we have been able to rotate the entire bench," she said.
The Jamaicans, who ranked fourth in the world, defeated the third-ranked England 2-1 in their last competitive series, in April.
The Sunshine Girls have retained six members of the squad which won bronze at the last year's World Championships, in New Zealand in 2007. They are captain Nadine Bryan, vice captain Sasher-Gaye Henry, Nicole Aiken, Althea Byfield, Romelda Aiken and Paula Thompson.
Jhaniele Fowler, Anna-Kay Griffths, Kimone Tulloch, Kameika Sherwood and Malysha Kelly will be making the trip to the World Championships for the first time.
"I am pretty pleased with the selection," said Pitterson. "I think that our players have really extended themselves during training and they are ready for whatever challenges lie ahead of them."
Stepping up preparations
Pitterson added that the Girls would be stepping up their preparations as they move closer the Championships.
"We will now be zooming in and working out different combinations and we are also looking to do some simulation matches in the next two weeks, as we intensify our preparations for the Championships," Pitterson said. "We are definitely looking to drive it as hard as we can before we get to the Championships."
Pitterson, who is in her second stint as head coach of the senior team, noted that she is looking forward to the challenge of leading the team at the Championships.
"I am pretty confident in my abilities because I think that I am equipped with the necessary tools and I am prepared as much as possible," said Pitterson, who was the head coach of the Sunshine Girls team which finished fourth at the Commonwealth Games in 2006.
Pitterson continued: "I am sure that there will be things down the line that may catch me off guard, but I am doing as much preparation as I can and that should help me to deal with what is to come."
