Brilliant Prior steers Sussex to win

Matt Prior hit a brilliant unbeaten 97 to guide Sussex to a five-wicket victory on the final day of their LV= County Championship clash with Hampshire at Hove.
Prior smashed 12 fours from 167 balls on a sluggish pitch on which run-scoring had been difficult for the previous three days.

Sussex, needing 233 for their fourth Championship win of the season, resumed on 82 for three and lost Luke Wells in the day's fifth over. But, from 105 for four, Prior and Andrew Hodd at first steadied the innings and then flourished.

Prior added 81 with Hodd and then another unbroken 49 with Ollie Rayner, who ended up on 22 not out and prevented the England man from reaching his hundred by hitting the winning boundary to the square third man ropes off Ervine.

Nick Compton's second century of the season secured Somerset a draw against Nottinghamshire.

The 28-year-old batted for more than six hours to compile 115 from 268 balls with 14 fours before he was brilliantly caught at short extra cover.

Chris Jones offered strong support to make 55 in only the second Championship innings of his career, while Samit Patel mopped up the Somerset tail with his left-arm spin to finish with four for 70.

Somerset were eventually bowled out for 426 and although Nottinghamshire batted for an hour of their nominal 34-over run-chase, they were never going to reach the 321 required for victory the captains shook hands with the score on 41 for two.

Yorkshire took just short of an hour on the final morning to complete a Championship double over Worcestershire with a six-wicket victory at Scarborough.

Some of the gloss was taken off their win, however, with the news they had been docked two of the 23 points they took from the match because of a slow over rate.

Yorkshire started out on 80 for three in their chase towards a 134 target and they lost Jonny Bairstow on the way but they were guided home by a cool unbeaten 52 from 20-year-old opener Joe Root, his fourth half-century of the season.

In Division Two, Tony Palladino shattered Glamorgan with a five-wicket haul as Derbyshire completed the double over the Welsh outfit.

The right-arm seamer was supported by Jon Clare and Mark Turner, who each took two wickets, as the visitors were dismissed for 167. Glamorgan's rapid demise lifted the hosts to a resounding 186-run victory with more than 41 overs remaining.

Palladino ended with figures of five for 50 as the hosts cantered to a 23-point win.
