Djokovic confirmed as number one
Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic was confirmed as the new world number one on Monday.
The Serbian star beat Rafael Nadal in four sets on Centre Court on Sunday and Monday's new ATP ranking list confirmed he had also taken Nadal's number one spot which he had held since June last year.Djokovic ends the Nadal-Roger Federer domination of the top spot - the pair had held it between them since Andy Roddick was dethroned in February 2004.
He said: "This is an amazing achievement to get to the top spot, especially with rivals such as Rafa and Roger.
"They made me work so hard and made me improve every day.
"There are no words to express how good they are but I always thought that I could become number one one day. Both the belief and the hard work took me there."
Djokovic has surged to number one after winning 48 of his 49 matches this season, a run which has brought him eight titles, including Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
He won his first 41 matches of the year - making an unbeaten run of 43 matches in total - before losing to Federer in the semi-finals of the French Open.
He is the 25th player to ascend to the top of the rankings since their introduction in 1973.
ATP president Adam Helfant hailed the achievement.
"Novak's results over the past year have been remarkable. His 43-match winning streak is one of sport's greatest stories of the year, not to mention his triumphs at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and six ATP World Tour events.
"His phenomenal success has come during an incredibly competitive era in men's tennis and he is a truly deserving new ATP World Tour number one."
Nadal slips to number two in the ranking list, with Federer staying at number three following his quarter-final defeat to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in SW19.
Briton Andy Murray keeps fourth place. He lost to Nadal in the last four.
Tsonga is the biggest climber in the top 20, rising from 19th to 14th after his run to the semis.
Wimbledon ladies' champion Petra Kvitova climbs to a career-high position of seventh in the WTA rankings following her triumph at the All England Club.
Beaten finalist Maria Sharapova returns to the top five in fifth, while semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka also rises on place - to fourth.
Caroline Wozniacki keeps her grip on top spot despite losing in the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Another last-16 loser, Serena Williams plummets to 175th - her lowest position since 1997 - after losing all the points she had gained for winning Wimbledon in 2010.
After 11 months on the sidelines, she has very few ranking points on her record but now has none to defend for the rest of the year so should climb quickly, providing she plays regularly.
Briton Elena Baltacha climbs 10 places to 58th, while Anne Keothavong reclaims the British number two spot from Heather Watson after reaching the second round in SW19. She returns to the top 100 at number 94.
Laura Robson, who won a grand slam match for the first time at Wimbledon before pushing Sharapova in round two, moves into the top 200 at a career-high position of 185.
