India dominate despite Edwards ton

India placed themselves in an enviable position in the third Test in Dominica even after Kirk Edwards made a statement with a hundred on debut.
Edwards and Shivnarine Chanderpaul forged a partnership of 161 to rescue the home side from a position of 40 for three in their second innings and wipe out the 143-run lead India had created earlier in the day.

But Edwards' dismissal in the final session triggered another mini-collapse as West Indies reached 224 for six at the close - an advantage of just 81 runs.

India hold a 1-0 lead in the series and will look to claim victory on the final day on Sunday.

Fidel Edwards had got West Indies off to a good start by taking three wickets in the morning for a five-wicket haul as the hosts dismissed India for 347.

With the tourists resuming on 308 for six, Fidel Edwards had Harbhajan Singh caught behind off the second ball of the morning before a brief five-minute rain delay halted further progress.

But Fidel Edwards struck again upon resumption, picking up the crucial wicket of India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (74) who pulled a short ball straight to Devendra Bishoo at deep square leg.

Bishoo got amongst the wickets six balls later as the leg-spinner saw Praveen Kumar (23) edge to Marlon Samuels, before Fidel Edwards completed his five-for by dismissing Ishant Sharma for two in the next over.

The hosts began their second innings trailing by 143 runs and got off to a terrible start as they lost both of their openers within seven overs.

Debutant Kieran Powell was the first to fall as he was caught in the slips off the bowling of Ishant for four.

And Adrian Barath followed Powell to the pavilion six balls later as he pushed at a ball from Kumar and directed it straight to Virat Kohli at fourth slip.

That left the hosts rattled on 10 for two and brought Kirk Edwards and Darren Bravo to the crease.

Bravo (14) was then snared by Harbhajan not long after lunch, but Kirk Edwards and Chanderpaul formed a partnership which put West Indies back on track.

The pair added 161 for the third wicket with Kirk Edwards the first to pass his half-century with a smart boundary off Sharma.

Chanderpaul then followed suit, having faced 153 balls to reach the mark, before a single off Munaf Patel saw Edwards celebrate his debut century - a knock which included eight fours and a six.

It was Harbhajan who eventually ended the partnership, removing Kirk Edwards for 110 with a teasing ball which the 26-year-old edged to Dhoni behind the wicket.

And the Indian off-spinner struck again just three balls later to send Samuels back to the pavilion without scoring.

Carlton Baugh (10) also fell in the final over of the day, Abhinav Mukund taking the catch from Kumar's delivery, as the tourists put the stoppers on West Indies' charge.

Chanderpaul remains at the crease, though, on 73, and he will look to keep the hosts batting for as long as possible on the final day.

Harbhajan ended the day with three for 61 while Kumar had figures of two for 29.
