India take command in Dominica

India take command in Dominica

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni led India's fightback on Day Three of the third and final Test against West Indies as the tourists regained the initiative in Dominica.

On a topsy-turvy day, the hosts had claimed quick wickets in the morning before half-centuries for Abhinav Mukund and VVS Laxman put India in the driving seat at lunch.
The home side responded by removing the pair and Virat Kohli during the afternoon, but Dhoni and Suresh Raina added further fifties in a dominant final session to propel India to 308 for six at stumps and a first-innings lead of 104.
It was nevertheless a brave effort by West Indies' bowlers, who had a number of fitness concerns, with Darren Sammy and Fidel Edwards taking two wickets each.
The tourists began the day on eight without loss and looking to chase down the Windies first-innings score of 204, but they soon suffered a double blow with the dismissals of opener Murali Vijay and Rahul Dravid.
Vijay showed early intent by smashing Fidel Edwards to the boundary in the opening over, but the bowler got his revenge seven balls later with a teasing delivery which the right-hander prodded to wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh.
That saw Vijay depart for five and his replacement, Dravid, was on the same score when he also succumbed three overs later.
Darren Sammy made the breakthrough this time, exposing a gap Dravid had left between bat and pad to bowl the veteran.
Series debutant Mukund was then joined by VVS Laxman at the crease and the pair set about repairing some of the damage.
Both took boundaries off Devendra Bishoo while Edwards was also made to pay for a wayward ball by Mukund as the tourists began to build a healthy score.
Mukund's patient approach paid off three overs before lunch when he notched up his maiden Test half-century from 132 balls with a single off Bishoo.
But the left-hander was eventually dismissed for 62 just four overs into the middle session, clipping a Bishoo delivery to Adrian Barath at short leg.
That brought Virat Kohli to the crease and the 22-year-old showed his trademark belligerence with boundaries off Edwards and Bishoo.
Laxman was more restrained at the other end, but the third boundary of his innings also brought up his half-century from 113 balls.
Kohli had reached 30 when he fell to Sammy with Baugh taking the catch.
And West Indies struck again soon after to remove Laxman for 56. He became a rare scalp for Shivnarine Chanderpaul with Baugh quick to respond to Laxman's slightly raised backfoot by removing the bails, much to surprise of the batsman.
It was left to captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina to pick up the pieces in the final session, and they rose to the challenge.
The pair produced a battling stand of 103 for the sixth wicket, with Raina becoming the third Indian batsman to claim a half-century in this innings, working a single off Bishoo.
However, West Indies' decision to take the new ball at the start of the next over reaped instant rewards with Edwards trapping Raina leg before for 50.
Dhoni responded by reaching his fifty with two runs off Sammy, while he and new partner Harbhajan Singh both found the boundary as India continued to build a sizeable lead.
Dhoni ended the day on an unbeaten 65 with Harbhajan 12 not out.
