Melzer, Benesova claim mixed doubles
Jurgen Melzer and Iveta Benesova claimed the Wimbledon mixed doubles title with a convincing win on Centre Court on Sunday.
The ninth seeds proved too good for the higher-seeded pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Elena Vesnina, winning 6-3 6-2.For Melzer it was a taste of glory in SW19 for the second year running as he had won the men's doubles crown in 2010.
The Austrian-Czech duo did not lose a set en route to the final and they never looked like doing so in the title decider.
They were outstanding on serve, holding throughout the contest. In fact they conceded just eight points in their service games.
A single break of serve was enough to secure the first set and Bhupathi, a seven-time grand slam champion in mixed, and Vesnina were powerless to stop them in the second.
Two more breaks in that second set saw the match won in just 51 minutes.
Melzer felt a relaxed attitude was the key, saying: "For me, mixed has to be fun. Playing singles, doubles, it's a lot of matches. When you step on court in mixed, you just want to enjoy it.
"I think that's what we did over the last four matches. We were smiling on the court. Of course, we wanted to win, but it wouldn't have been a nightmare or a disaster if we had lost the match.
"So I think that's what made us Wimbledon champions in the end."
