Monty: I won't give up on Open
Colin Montgomerie simply refuses to give up on the Open Championship without a real fight.
Needing a top-five finish at the Scottish Open to extend a run in The Open that goes back to 1990, last year's Ryder Cup captain began with a five-under-par 67 at Castle Stuart. But he was far from content with it.
"I bogeyed the two easy holes on the course," said Montgomerie, who described himself as so much "in the zone" that he did not see Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson as their paths crossed.
He hit into a bunker on the driveable 306-yard third, his 12th, and reckoned missing the ninth fairway was "a disaster - the thing is 110 yards wide".
The 48-year-old found such a bad lie in thick rough that his second shot was played backwards.
There was also an eagle at the long second and five birdies, but he added: "I should have pushed ahead a little bit more and done better than that.
"Five under, you would have taken it before the start, but when I eagled to go five under I wouldn't have taken that.
"If I wasn't disappointed I would give up. I've never got in a car and thought how great a day it is bogeying the last hole; the day I do that is the day I give up.
"I want to play next week. It's a tournament I've loved and finished runner-up in (behind Tiger Woods at St Andrews in 2005) and I want to play again.
