Porsche set for Le Mans return
Porsche are to return to the top flight of the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2014 - a move that will end a 16-year absence in that category from the world's greatest endurance race.
The German manufacturing giant are the most successful marque in Le Mans history with 16 outright victories. However, Porsche have not competed with a works car since their last win in 1998 when Allan McNish was part of a three-man team that took the chequered flag in a 911 GT1.
Although Porsche have retained a strong presence in the GT class since, they believe now is the time to take on Audi and Peugeot in the prototype category.
"Motorsport was always an essential part of the Porsche brand," said Matthias Muller, president of the executive board at Porsche AG.
"So for us it was only a matter of time before we returned as a factory to the top league of racing.
"The success of Porsche at Le Mans is unrivalled, and we want to follow up on this with the 17th outright victory."
Porsche now have plenty of time ahead of them for development with Hartmut Kristen, head of Porsche Motorsport adding: "We will begin detailed research in order to evaluate the various concept alternatives for our new car.
"These obviously depend on how the regulations for 2014 look in detail.
"In principle, these regulations are interesting for us because the integration of our hybrid technology in the vehicle concept is one possible option
