New Zealand booked their place in the semi-finals but a 0-0 draw ended 2004 champions Germany's chances of a medal.
The Europeans needed to win by three goals to overtake the Black Sticks and then hope for a positive result in the final match of the day between Argentina and Australia.
However, they barely raised a challenge and when Celine Wilde missed an open goal from two yards early in the second half it almost confirmed Germany, who were fourth in Beijing four years ago, were not going to get lucky.
After an evenly-contested first half failed to produce anay goals, Germany should have made the breakthrough soon after the interval when Natascha Keller's shot was deflected up off Kayla Sharland's stick, but Wilde somehow diverted the high ball over from almost under the crossbar.
Germany thought they had finally scored when Julia Mueller hit in a high reverse-stick shot from a penalty corner but the ball had not travelled five yards out of the circle for her to be able to do that.
The European's protested but the video referral backed up the decision to rule out the goal and Germany ceased to be medal contenders as they went out with a whimper.
South Africa stunned the United States with a seven-goal blast to lift themselves off the bottom of Pool B with a 7 - 0 victory and avoid a last-place play-off.
Tarryn Bright (2), Lesle-Ann George, Jen Wilson, Pietie Coetzee (2) and Dirkie Chamberlain got on the scoresheet for South Africa.

The US dropped to bottom spot on goal difference and go into the 11/12th-place play-off.
China's 1-0 defeat to Japan ended their chance of making the semi-finals and ensured Great Britain qualified even before they played their final group match.
The Beijing silver medallists needed a victory to force GB to get something out of their match with Holland, while a five-goal margin would have left the host nation requiring a win against the defending champions.
But they found their Asian neighbours, who had much of the possession but few of the chances, tough opponents and were stunned when Rika Komazawa scrambled home a penalty corner midway through the second half.
It ensured all the pressure was removed from GB this evening, with the only factor to decide now being who finishes top.
South Korea secured fourth spot in Pool A with a 3-1 win over Belgium which means they will play off for seventh place on Wednesday.
The Asian side took an eighth-minute lead through Kim Jong Eun and Lee Seon Ok added a second 11 minutes before half-time.
Belgium, the lowest-ranked side in the tournament, got themselves back into the game when Erica Coppey scored just after the interval.
But as they chased a draw late on they withdrew goalkeeper Aisling D'Hooghe to give them an extra outfield player and Korea capitalised as Kim scored her second in the last minute.
Korea will now play Germany while Belgium will face the United States in the 11th-place play-off as they seek to avoid last spot on their Olympic debut.
Great Britain's women slipped to successive defeats as they lost to Holland 2-1 but with their semi-final qualification already secured the only effect was to give them a slightly tougher draw.
Had they beaten Holland they would have topped Pool A and faced the second-placed side in the other group but now they will take on the winners, to be decided by the outcome of the late match between Argentina with Australia.
