Di Resta in high spirits once again
Paul di Resta insists he is again in "full fighting spirit" after conceding to beating himself up of late following recent crashes.
Di Resta has been involved in incidents in the last two races that have resulted in drive-through penalties and the Force India driver narrowly missing out on points. In Monaco, the 25-year-old was rightly adjudged to have run into Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso going through the Loews hairpin.
But then in Canada 12 days ago, as Di Resta attempted to pass Nick Heidfeld in his Renault for fourth place, the penalty appeared to be severe from the stewards.
Di Resta has admitted to feeling down after what unfolded at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, requiring the support of those closest to him.
"I definitely wasn't being aggressive," said a defensive Di Resta as he reflected on the incident with Heidfeld ahead of Sunday's European Grand Prix in Valencia.
"It wasn't my intention to put myself at risk because it was a race where people were making a lot of mistakes.
"I didn't think it was a risky situation, and having looked at it again with my engineer, I definitely would make the same decision again.
"I just have to take the positives. Yes, we could have come away with a lot of points and a great result, but it didn't happen.
"The positives are that we were very fast, challenging at the front and having some great battles.
"It did take a bit of time to get over, I'll admit that. You think about it and you beat yourself up inside.
"That's when you do need people around you to help with that. It's almost like a second opinion, to have people with you on the same wavelength because sometimes you are not always right in life.
"But I firmly believe on that occasion there was logic behind what I was trying to achieve.
"When you are down you have to lift your head, and coming off the back of two grands prix that have been difficult, we are here in full fighting spirit.
"Hopefully the potential will be there to be in the same position again."
Since scoring points in the opening two races of his F1 career, Di Resta has failed to pick up any in the last five and has slipped to 17th in the drivers' standings.
The Scot firmly believes he has given his all, and is just missing a degree of luck.
"We've narrowly missed out on points at a few grands prix, like in China where we were just four laps away from scoring after using a very aggressive strategy," added Di Resta.
"Equally in Barcelona we had great race performance. If we had just been able to qualify a bit better then we would have been on for some points.
"So the potential has been there. Yes, we're on the edge because we are pushing with a maximum attack approach.
"But there is a bit of misfortune there as well. You definitely can't say it's just mistakes. You just need a little bit of luck.
"But I always said there would be tough times ahead as we try and improve from where we were at the beginning.
"We'll try and keep our strengths, keep focused on what we are trying to achieve. We've good ambitions, and realistic ones."
