Bravo: Chile can reach Copa semis
Chile captain Claudio Bravo has revealed his side's pre-tournament targets are to reach the semi-finals and lead every match.
They start with their opening Group C match of the 2011 Copa America against Mexico. The 28-year-old goalkeeper is one of the most experienced Chile players in the squad and believes a place in the final four is not beyond his country despite the presence of the likes of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay.
"The idea is seeing a winning Chile, to take the lead in every game," he said.
"We proposed to reach the semi-finals, but not as an objective but rather as a general ideal. Within each is the idea of looking for the title and we came here with this idea, but you have to go step-by-step and not create false expectations."
Chile were 27th in the latest FIFA World Rankings and have never won the Copa America but have reached three finals, the last coming in 1987 and Bravo insisted the team will approach the tournament in the same manner they do all of their international matches.
"We face matches the same way we have been doing for some time, our ideas, our clarity, our football. We do not change anything in this Copa America," he said.
Mexico has been an invited guest of the tournament since 1993, when they reached the final in their maiden competition. This year however they have taken a young, inexperienced squad to Argentina, choosing instead to focus on their member association's Gold Cup.
The decision was vindicated when they won the tournament with a convincing 4-2 win over the United States in last weekend's final, while Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez finished as the leading goalscorer.
With the Gold Cup and limitations on squad selection placed on Mexico, the squad had to me made up of players from the Under-22 category, with five places available for other individuals and it will be a challenge for such an inexperienced squad to challenge the major sides in the tournament.
