Cavendish in winning mode

Cycling: Cavendish in winning mode

Mark Cavendish will seek his second win of the 2011 Tour de France after a fifth stage Bradley Wiggins was pleased to merely survive.
HTC-Highroad sprinter Cavendish, who is expected to join Wiggins at Team Sky in 2012, scorched to the 16th Tour stage success of his career on Wednesday's 164.5-kilometre route from Carhaix to Cap Frehel on the Brittany coast before demonstrating his combustible personality.
The 26-year-old from the Isle of Man compared the surprise win with his 2009 success in Aubenas, dedicated his success to his recently-deceased dog, accused former team-mate Andre Greipel of striking him and rebuked a journalist for a factually inaccurate question.
He also addressed those who he believes have doubted his ability.
"It's always sweet to silence ignoramuses. They know who they are," said Cavendish, who will be the favourite for today's 226.5km stage from Dinan to Lisieux.
Pointing to his head, Cavendish added: "Most of my problems are in here.
"But once I get settled I'm normally all right and it gets easier.
"I'm just passionate about the sport. I just love to win."
HTC-Highroad sports director Brian Holm was impressed with the Manxman's win.
Holm said: "It was a bigger mess than we expected. I think Cav did it pretty much on his own."
If there are any doubters of his ability, it is perhaps in relation to the Cavendish`s bid for the points classification's green jersey, which has so far remained elusive despite 11 wins in the last two Tours.
Entering today's sixth stage, Cavendish was fourth in the race for the maillot vert, 36 points behind Philippe Gilbert.
Cavendish would perhaps be closer had he not been impeded at the day's intermediate sprint by Jose Joaquin Rojas and Tom Boonen, who were later punished and docked points.
Rojas also lost the green jersey to Gilbert.
Wiggins, meanwhile, was merely content not to be following Janez Brajkovic (RadioShack) to hospital after being one of a swathe of riders to crash.
The 31-year-old Team Sky leader, who remained sixth overall, 10 seconds behind yellow jersey Thor Hushovd, said: "I didn't really crash that hard; I sort of crashed behind the crash and just bent my handlebars and brakes and things like that.
"It was mad - the worst stage so far and I'm relieved it's over now."
