Colombia eye second-spot in Grp A

Colombia eye second-spot in Grp A
Colombia coach Hernan Dario Gomez does not expect to remain in his job if his side fail to progress beyond the group stages of the Copa America.
Colombia, who are the only country other than Brazil to have won the Copa America in the last five editions following their success on home soil in 2001, are in Group A along with hosts Argentina, Bolivia and the Costa Ricans, whom they begin the tournament against on Sunday.
Argentina are highly fancied to win not only the group but also the whole tournament, but Colombia will hope to secure the second qualifying berth and a place in the quarter-finals.
Even if they do not finish in the top two in Group A, Colombia could still make it through to the last eight as one of the two best third-placed sides in the 12-team event.
With that in mind, and the fact that invited guests Costa Rica have brought a young and inexperienced squad, Colombia know they should be looking at a quarter-final berth at least.
"I have it clear in this regard, if we don't qualify for the second phase I'm going because I will have failed, it's as simple as that. It won't just be that I'm going; they'll sack me," Gomez was quoted as saying.
Gomez boasts the likes of Porto stars Falcao and Fredy Guarin in his squad but will be without Nice goalkeeper David Ospina after he suffered a facial injury in training on Tuesday.
Costa Rica coach Ricardo La Volpe, meanwhile, has sought to take the heat off his young side - most of which are under 23 - ahead of Sunday's match in San Salvador de Jujuy.
He said: "I have great confidence in them. I'm taking the pressure off them. They must play without fear."
The Central Americans, who are replacing Japan in the tournament, suffered tragedy in the build-up to the event when defender Dennis Marshall was killed in a car accident last week.
