In further surprises, German fifth seed Florian Mayer was beaten 6-2 6-3 by Argentinian qualifier Federico Del Bonis, and sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko went down 3-6 6-1 6-4 to home wild-card Cedrik-Marcel Stebe.
Third seed Mikhail Youzhny did advance with a 6-3 6-3 win over Germany's Philipp Petzschner, and former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero beat German lucky loser Bastian Knittel 6-2 6-4.
Fabio Fognini made routine progress with a 6-4 6-1 win over Germany's Robin Kern and, on a disappointing day for home fans, Tobias Kamke and Mischa Zverev were beaten by Jeremy Chardy and qualifier Pavol Cervenak respectively.
