PyeongChang to host Winter Games

PyeongChang to host Winter Games
The 2018 Winter Olympics will take place in PyeongChang after the South Korean city was voted in by International Olympic Committee members.
PyeongChang won in the first round of voting in the IOC session in Durban, against German bidder Munich and the French resort of Annecy.
It is the third time South Korea have bid for the winter Games and means they now have achieved the 'grand slam' of major sports events: the summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988, the football World Cup in 2002, the athletics World Championships in Daegu next month, plus the 2018 winter Games.
It is also another victory notched up for English public relations strategist Mike Lee, who previously worked on the successful summer Olympic bids for London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016 plus the Qatar 2022 football World Cup bid.
The election results revealed a landslide victory for the Koreans. PyeongChang polled 63 votes in the first round of voting compared to 25 for Munich and just seven for Annecy.
British Olympic Association chairman Colin Moynihan sent his congratulations.
Moynihan said: "We congratulate the PyeongChang 2018 bid team and our colleagues at the Korean National Olympic Committee.
"As the first Asian city outside of Japan to host the winter Games, PyeongChang will bring the excitement of the Winter Olympics to a new audience. We look forward to what we are sure will be excellently-organised Games that make Asia and the Olympic Movement proud."
Kim Jin-sun, the former governor of the Gangwon province where PyeongChang is located, had earlier pleaded with the IOC to make it third-time lucky for the Koreans.
He said: "We never gave up, and tried again and listened to your advice and improved our plans.
"I believe it is my destiny to stand in front of you for the third time. Our people have waited for over 10 years for the Winter Olympics. Today I humbly ask for your support for the chance of hosting the winter Games for the first time in our country."
