Blake up and running at Legg Mason
James Blake was a winner as the Legg Mason Classic got under way in Washington DC.
Blake advanced with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Japan's Tatsuma Ito.Croatia's Ivo Karlovic fell at the first hurdle, however, losing 6-4 7-6 (7-4) to Michael Russell in a late game.
Donald Young breezed past New Zealander Artem Sitak 6-0 6-3, while qualifier Chris Guccione made it to the second round by topping Alejandro Falla 7-6 (7-3) 6-3.
Radek Stepanek had to come from behind to beat Philipp Petzschner 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 6-0, while Igor Kunitsyn was also made to work hard before beating Gilles Muller 6-4 3-6 7-6 (7-5).
Qualifier Marinko Matosevic topped Richard Berankis 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-1, while Matthew Ebden advanced when Rejeev Ram retired hurt while trailing 6-1 3-2.
