Boxing: Vitaly-Haye bout unlikely
David Haye admits that his showdown with Wladimir Klitschko could be the last time we see him in the ring.
The WBA heavyweight champion still wants to take on Vitali Klitschko after facing his little brother on July 2nd, but admits the chances of that are slim. The elder Klitschko is scheduled to defend the WBC title against Poland's Tomasz Adamek on September 10th - a month before the October 13 retirement day Haye is steadfastedly sticking to.
"He's got another fight lined up in Poland in September, so if that goes ahead it's unlikely and the chances of fighting his brother are slim," he told Sky Sports News HD.
"But this is boxing and anything can happen."
"If it happens before October 13 then there's a strong possibility it will; if it doesn't I may never fight his brother."
Should Haye beat Wladimir in Hamburg he will hold three of the four world titles, his WBA belt plus the WBO and IBF versions.
He wants to retire from the sport as the undisputed heavyweight king, but cannot do that without facing Vitali. Should he beat Wladimir, his big brother is likely to want to exact revenge in the autumn, which could mean Adamek stepping aside.
But the Pole is the mandatory challenger and is unlikely to do so, while a failure to fulfil the defence could see the WBC strip Vitali of their belt and end the brothers' dream of holding all four major titles at once.
Should Haye lose, a rematch with Wladimir is not out of the question, but he accepts that the chances of him boxing anyone again after this, are looking remote - which makes him even more determined to put on a show come July 2nd.
"This potentially could be my last fight, so I'm going to make sure it's my best one by a massive margin," he said.
"I'm making sure physically I'm in the right shape - mentally I'm there.
"Now I'm just looking forward to going over there and ripping them titles off him."
