Top seed Flavia Pennetta eased through to the second round of the Palermo International with a 6-4 6-1 win over Anastassia Grymalska.
Crowd favourite Pennetta, who has reached the final in each of the last two years, needed only 67 minutes to overcome her fellow Italian, converting six of her 10 break point chances.
Sixth seed Tsvetana Pironkova also reached the second round in her first match since reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals. The Bulgarian beat Georgia's Anna Tatishvili 6-2 7-5.
Alberta Brianti needed just an hour to beat Silvia Albano 6-0 6-1 in another all-Italian match, while Uzbek Akgul Amanmuradova beat Madalina Gojnea of Romania 7-6 (7-4) 6-2.
