Stoner storms to Silverstone pole

Stoner storms to Silverstone pole
Australian Casey Stoner will start the AirAsia British MotoGP on pole after setting a track record time in qualifying.
However, the session was overshadowed by a nasty injury to Cal Crutchlow.
The Coventry rider, competing in his first grand prix on home soil, came off his Tech 3 Yamaha going into Beckett`s and, after a lengthy slide along the floor, suffered a suspected fractured left collarbone and concussion.
He was taken to hospital in Oxford to undergo a scan on his head injury.
Crutchlow`s pace had been impressive until that point, but it was left to Stoner to take the honours at the head of the grid, going round in two minutes 2.020 seconds at the Northamptonshire track.
Stoner`s time was a record for the track, while second-placed Marco Simoncelli (Honda) and Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) in third both beat the previous best time, set by Lorenzo a year ago.
Simoncelli was the first to shatter that time, with Lorenzo and Stoner following. Simoncelli then broke it again, before Stoner had the last word.
The leading trio were not the only riders to achieve impressive times, though, with Yamaha`s Ben Spies earning fourth place on the grid with a time of two minutes 2.677 seconds, a second quicker than he was yesterday.
Stoner`s Honda team-mate Andrea Dovizioso will start in fifth, while Karel Abraham recovered from an early crash to take sixth.
Multiple champion Valentino Rossi could only make 13th on his Ducati, with Nicky Hayden (seven), Colin Edwards (eight), Alvaro Bautista (nine) and Randy de Puniet making up the top 10.
Toni Elias joined Crutchlow in crashing out of qualifying.
"Cal's injury is a very big disappointment and I feel really sorry for him because he was desperate to do well in his home race here at Silverstone," said team manager Herve Poncharal.
"He's been fast all weekend, so we had high hopes that he could get a good place on the grid and be challenging for the top six in the race.
"But track conditions were quite cold and it was obvious from looking at the TV pictures that the tyre wasn't up to temperature.
"He is in pain right now but I think he is more upset than anything else because he wanted to put on a good show for the British fans."
His team-mate Colin Edwards fractured his collarbone a week ago but is racing this weekend, and Poncharal did not rule out Crutchlow racing at Assen next time out.
