The home side were 189 for eight, 12 runs short of India's first innings 201 all out, from 73.2 overs with two wickets in hand.

Marlon Samuels (77) and Ravi Rampaul (0) were batting at the rain interruption.

Samuels, brought back into the side in place of vice-captain Brendan Nash following the first Test defeat, shared a 77-run stand with Shivnarine Chanderpaul to help the Windies recover from a perilous 57 for five in response to India's first-innings 201.

Chanderpaul's wicket was the only one to fall in a morning session that was delayed due to the rainy conditions that had also cut short yesterday's play at the Kensington Oval. Starting the day on 98 for five, Samuels and Chanderpaul added 36 runs to their partnership before the obdurate Chanderpaul was dismissed in the penultimate over before lunch, the left-hander being bowled via an inside edge as he aimed a pull at the bowling of Abhimanyu Mithun.
Chanderpaul had faced 117 balls for his 37 and struck one four.
There were no further inroads for India after that, however, as Samuels, who has struck five boundaries in his 119-ball knock, and Carlton Baugh (one not out) saw West Indies through to the interval, where they lie 63 runs adrift of their opponents with four wickets remaining.
India lead 1-0 in the three-match series.
